It won’t be what we had, but it will be what we have.”
— R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, on the future of making music without his bandmates. On the surface it sounds like one of those “it is what it is”-style quotes. A Yogism, if you will. But on closer inspection, I think it beautifully and succinctly sums up the end of any relationship, working or otherwise, and might be one of my new favorite quotes ever.

Got this in the mail yesterday from REM HQ. First of all, imagine if this band had quit before the internet age? I would’ve found out via MTV, or if I had somehow missed that, a newsletter. Weird.
More importantly, this made me realize that all of two weeks before the announcement, I re-upped my Fan Club membership for another year. Whoops. Here’s hoping the 2011 (and final) Christmas package) is a doozy.

My favorite R.E.M. song happens to be one of their first. “Wolves, Lower” from their near-perfect 1982 debut EP Chronic Town.
