It won’t be what we had, but it will be what we have.

R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, on the future of making music without his bandmates. On the surface it sounds like one of those “it is what it is”-style quotes. A Yogism, if you will. But on closer inspection, I think it beautifully and succinctly sums up the end of any relationship, working or otherwise, and might be one of my new favorite quotes ever.

I have found that the best way to do creative work is to do it when you have something you don’t want to do as a deadline hanging over your head. So, for example, if it’s Thursday afternoon at 4, and you’ve gotta get a big presentation together for the first thing on Friday—that’s an excellent time to come up with a new project, and start doing it… I find that, in avoiding one project, it frees me up creatively on another project.

Jim Coudal during 15 Slides, 3 Writers, 3 Ways (mp3) at SXSW. I can’t tell you how comforting it is to read that there’s someone else like me out there. It’s an inspiration. Though I could be further inspired by Coudal and try to figure out how to make money off of my many projects born of productive procrastination.

I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don’t notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.
