— R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, on the future of making music without his bandmates. On the surface it sounds like one of those “it is what it is”-style quotes. A Yogism, if you will. But on closer inspection, I think it beautifully and succinctly sums up the end of any relationship, working or otherwise, and might be one of my new favorite quotes ever.

I have found that the best way to do creative work is to do it when you have something you don’t want to do as a deadline hanging over your head. So, for example, if it’s Thursday afternoon at 4, and you’ve gotta get a big presentation together for the first thing on Friday—that’s an excellent time to come up with a new project, and start doing it… I find that, in avoiding one project, it frees me up creatively on another project.

— Jim Coudal during 15 Slides, 3 Writers, 3 Ways (mp3) at SXSW. I can’t tell you how comforting it is to read that there’s someone else like me out there. It’s an inspiration. Though I could be further inspired by Coudal and try to figure out how to make money off of my many projects born of productive procrastination.

I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don’t notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.
